Edgenics has deployed the first phase of a national broadband network that will power innovative video-centric services, interactive distance-learning and other Web 2.0 applications for schools

Working with a leading broadband backbone carrier, Edgenics has built a virtual broadband network to interconnect Edgenics’ data-center facilities and support “last mile” broadband connections to schools that are participating in various Edgenics academic programs.

To facilitate cost-effective deployment, Edgenics has co-located its servers, routers and other network infrastructure in network co-location centers, of its carrier partner, at strategic points around the country. This arrangement provides Edgenics with local or near-local network nodes that can be easily, and cost-effectively interconnected, to provide broadband connectivity for participating schools.

“This agreement is about demonstrating carrier flexibility and leveraging business relationships with other providers to help improve the quality of education for tomorrow’s leaders,” said Kevin Flaherty, vice president of sales for New Edge. “Edgenics will do well by doing something good for schools, especially those in rural areas and under-funded school districts.”

Edgenics will deliver video content over its IP network facilities in various modes such as live broadcasts, video on demand and two-way interactive videoconferencing.

Edgenics will expand its distance-learning programs and other video-centric services nationally in five phases. The first phase of the MPLS-based network deployment will support Edgenics e-Learning services for schools and learning centers, located primarily in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. It will also support the delivery of e-Learning services to schools in Georgia, New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Tennessee. Edgenics is working to expand the capability to provide its interactive E-Learning services to all other regions of the country.

Schools, especially those in rural and other underserved areas, will benefit from the Edgenics broadband connectivity services.
